Originally from Hagios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece, he was educated in France and the USA. After ordination, he served as Chancellor of the Metropolis of Belgium. Between 1994 and 2014, he headed the Office of the Orthodox Church in the European Union.
In 2003, the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Holy and Sacred Synod unanimously elected him as Metropolitan of France. Subsequently, he served as the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s representative in the Theological Dialogue with the Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Academic Meetings with Islam and Judaism. On February 16, 2021, he was unanimously elected Metropolitan Elder of Chalcedon.
Currently, he is a board member of the International Dialogue Center (KAICIID), co-moderator of Religions for Peace International, member of the executive committee of the World Council of Churches, on the board of the Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, and former President of the Conference of European Churches (CEC). In 2022, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens.
